Rotten Tomatoes has taken down its 'want to see / not interested' score page and removed comments. The CPT Marvel movie began to tank in these ratings, bottoming out at 26% before the score disappeared. If you've been following this, what do you think of it?

Okay, the basics: Rotten Tomatoes, a critic-aggregate site, has, or had, a polling feature for upcoming movies allowing people to vote on whether they want to see a movie or not. Voters can comment on why they made their choice, though it isn't a requirement. The votes are tallied on a rolling basis, giving a percentage score. Some movies score high, some low, some in-between. CPT Marvel started out fairly high, with something like a 90% rating. This rating began to fall as the marketing ramped up. Many comments cited star Brie Larson's interviews, including a speech she gave for an award last year saying that A Wrinkle in Time wasn't made for 40-year-old white men, as their reason for not being interested. Others cited what they saw as uninteresting trailers.
The aggregate 'want to see' score fell to 26% before Rotten Tomatoes revamped its site to disallow comments and only allow 'want to see' votes. All previous comments have been 'disappeared' though I heard a rumor that, if you log in, you can still see them. I'm not interested in getting a membership at yet another internet site so I can't swear to that being true. Rotten Tomatoes blogged that they disabled this feature because people got confused between the poll and actual reviews, which can only be given once the movie has been released and people have seen it. This may be true - the headlines portray these 'want to see' / 'not interested' votes as 'reviews' in their headlines. Critics of the site theorize that they disabled the poll (it can only be a poll if there is more than one choice) directly because of the low 'want to see' rating.
That's the nutshell. It has now turned into a replay of Ghostbusters: Answer The Call with accusations of misogyny v. accusations of pushing an agenda.

To misquote Old Ben Kenobi...
The critics are easily startled. But they'll be back soon. And in greater numbers. We must be cautious.

Lol! Yes, critics critique. Unfortunately, fans get stuck in the middle and feel they must choose sides. It doesn't help to be either insulted (males who don't like X movie) or erased (females who don't like X movie).

I suspect that we'll be going through this -- again[/u] -- when the Black Widow movie makes it to theaters.
Didn't they do this dog and pony show also with the Wonder Woman movie, in addition to the remake of Ghostbusters with the all woman cast?

Surprisingly, not so much with Wonder Woman. They tried in a few interviews to get Gal Gadot to talk more about 'muh wamenz' but she wouldn't be drawn in. I'm hoping the same for Black Widow. I'm especially hopeful because it isn't necessary - fans already know the character, the advertising doesn't need to talk her up.

I guess you could say this is a review of the reviews I've read. Reviews are out as of yesterday (6 Mar). 84% at Rotten Tomatoes this morning with 136 reviews, 66% at Metacritic with 39 reviews. From the ones I've read, it's a standard sort of Marvel + buddy cop movie with some fairly decent battle scenes. Trust Marvel, IOW. No discernable agenda other than some reviewers who thought that having a female superhero was in some way empowering, which is more of a reflection on the reviewers than on the film. A few mentioned the cat - the cat is awesome, or as one YouTube reviewer (Mecharandom42 www.youtube.com/channel/UC2KekYVX0xHLa4G9WmcIeJQ) puts it, 'Orange Cat Good.' It doesn't seem to be necessary to see this before Avengers: Endgame but it's more of a CPT Marvel origin-in-flashbacks film. I'm getting the idea that I'll see it about the same way I see Ghostbusters: Answer the Call - a popcorn film, decent summer-fare sort of film, enjoyable but forgettable in the grander scheme of things. www.metacritic.com/movie/captain-marvelwww.rottentomatoes.com/m/captain_marvel
