Interesting. I wonder if this character will take Natascha's place in the Avengers now that she's dead. I didn't follow the comics into the latter seventies and beyond so I don't know the character but the article suggests that this Yelena has been Black Widow in the comics.

Probably could. The comics have given character titles to "new kids" before.
There have been (if I misremember correctly) two Phoenix characters in the comics. The original, Jean Grey, and (I think) a daughter fathered by Scott Summers (and that was with, again I think, a Jean Grey clone and raised in an alternate timeline before being brought back after Jean died as Phoenix).
At one point, Peter Parker's Spider-Man in the comics was replaced by Morales (first name may or may not be Miles) who is black.
Ms Marvel (originally Carol Danvers who became Captain Marvel) was taken over by, I think, a young girl who happens to be Muslim.
Steve's shield and title of Captain America has been wielded by both Bucky and by Sam Wilson.
I think I've seen something in the comics in the recent past of a young black girl who is a computer whiz and mechanical genius who builds her own Ironman style suit.
Logan's Wolverine has been replaced by his daughter clone X-23.
Jane Foster is (or was briefly) worthy of the title of Thor.

Black female Iron Man = Riri Williams, Ironheart. A lot of people want her to come into the MCU, I guess she was a popular character.
CPT Marvel - Monica Rambeau (sp?) was, apparently, the original while Carol Danvers was, as you say, Ms. Marvel.
