Before you knew anything about the movie, what were some of your first memories?
01. Watching those first movie trailers on TV 02. I thought that the boy in the karate gi was R2D2 and that the gold android was talking to the short robot being worked on.

I thought the movie was one of those trendy popular-today types of movies. My friends went to see it a couple of times and gushed over it so much that I swung over to 'curious' setting and went to see it. Another thing that made me take notice was that my friends didn't have a lot of money so going twice was a big deal. They loved Jaws but only saw it once due to finances. If they'd spend money to see it twice, it must be something. Loved it. Went to see it maybe three more times, dragging the first-born with me.
Afterward: Who to ship? There was a lot to be said for Luke and Leia - he's clearly the hero, and she's the damsel not quite in distress; but then, she and Han made such a good couple, and there was all this playful bickering back and forth, that I think I eventually went for that ship. Luke, training to be a Jedi (and me not knowing much about them, just about monkhoods in general at the time) I figured he'd live as an aesthete and never marry. That was before we found out about the Skywalker twins.

Hubby and I were dating at that point and quite a few of those dates we went to the movies to watch Star Wars. Not every time (even though he would have if I'd asked).
After. My Star Wars fic didn't 'ship. I did one short one-shot, as they call them now, that was published in a fanzine concerning Han Solo and that lost shipment of smuggled spice that he had to dump that had Jabba pissed at him. And I published a piece of filk about Vader and his being knocked out of the battle at Yavin-4. It was done to the music of ABBA's "S.O.S." Both of these were done in late 1978, early 1979.
All my tomes and tomes of hand written but unpublished fic in that fandom didn't ship either. Vader used the fact that he'd been knocked out of the battle at Yavin-4 to drop off Imperial radar. He turned from the Dark Side and returned to his Sith brethren (who were not of the Dark Side) in a distant quadrant. He also wasn't a prisoner of his suit and, yes, he had the shoulder length hair the same "dirty/dark blond" color as Luke's and Luke's blue eyes. Yeah, he was Luke's father (because this "bad guy is Protagonists' father who turns from his evil ways" is a very old trope... as is the "twins being hidden away for protection" but I didn't take my AUs in that direction).
For what its worth, that one shot was published under the pen name of "Looped Skywalker"

I never got involved in any fandoms. Too much money when things squeaked by as is. Going to see Star Wars a handful of times meant skimping elsewhere, which I did, figuring that mental health is as important as other things. I did have a couple more indulgences - I got the novelization. I don't remember much about it now, other than it had a gold cover. The other was getting an iron-on transfer for an old Hang Ten shirt I had. It was C3PO and R2D2 at the beginning of the film, with the Star Wars logo plastered on it. My mom, and my friend's mom, kept after me about when Lucas was going to pay me for advertising for his movie.
