A few of the YouTube comics types are going ape over that, a few are just mentioning.

the 'tubers who are just mentioning might not actually "Understand The Importance" of this. Not sure how long ago Marvel put this into their multiverse (and was it before or after fanfiction was doing it?) since I haven't been able to afford (or even actually find) titles in quite some time since the local gas stations, grocery stores and WallyWorld quit stocking them. And I haven't been able to keep up with the animated stuff at all since they only show that on cable channels and, while we did finally cave (actually I caved, I was adamantly against it for decades but I got to where I needed to at least be able to light up the plasma and see my news and the occasional PBS program). And, even with cable, those channels are not part of the basic package.

The YouTubers I heard mentioning it are comics-based channels. They call out the newer comics for ret-conning older characters, bring up long-time characters I've never heard of for the movies and newer comics to use instead of race- or gender-swapping more famous characters, and fangurl over art by the people they call the greats. They have huge books of comic art, original size (amazing stuff, btw, I didn't know that the comics were shrunk for publication). If you want to watch a YouTuber go from militant activist to a squealing pile of goo, watch those channels.

And those who call out don't know that comics have been doing the recon thing since almost the beginning because otherwise they'd need to either have the character have kids who then one steps up to fill the parental supersuit or the character completely loses relevance to the current demographic. Before the Spider-Man movies (or the cringy TV show) comic(book)verse Spidey was was a senior in high school and (I think) already dating MJ when he was bitten by the radioactive spider -- because I don't think they had an idea about genetically modifying in the early 60s. Stan Lee was poisoning everyone with various forms of radiation back then:
Parker: radioactive spider bite Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Sue & Johnny Storm: cosmic radiation Banner: gamma radiation Matt Murdock: unidentified radioactive waste Of course, Stark was his call out to DC's Batman ("Obscenely" rich but no powers, builds a powered suit "in a cave with a box of scraps")
Granted, Rogers was changed by medical science so Lee had to come up with other methods later.

A few of them are very big comics fans, own the big books with original drawings, etc., and have collections so big I wonder how they afford the warehouses to store them (hyperbole, but you know...) They talk about the history of the Various Marvels - Mar-Vel, Miss Marvel, CPT Marvel/Danvers and CPT Marvel/Rambeau. One is particularly incensed by race- and gender-swapping, asks why they don't use the characters of color and females they already have, after all, they turned a B-list hero into their pivotal Marvel Movies character so why not elevate someone like Blade? This guy's channel is here: www.youtube.com/user/youngrippa59 He mentions characters I've never heard of so don't recall their names. Yeah, Lol, the more we learn the more comics writers can inflict on their characters.

I'd like to see Storm in the next Black Panther movie with T'challa. One story line, years ago, was she was his queen and they had a son together. From the looks of it, Azari was raised and trained by Tony Stark to be a next generation Avenger.
And, yeah, they have soooo many characters that they've created over the years and then let slide onto a back burner only to show up in things like a Netflix series (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist).
Of course, with all the "we want it now!" screams for pandering (which is what I personally call it when someone wants a very established character who isn't LGBTQ to be so), people have forgotten just how "subversive" Marvel titles used to be. And, granted, current Marvel folks don't remember either. In the '60s and '70s, Spidey's chatter in the comics (not so much in the animated shows) was often referencing the drug addiction and poverty he saw on the streets of New York in addition of sassing super powered bad guys.
Raven Darkholme (Mystique) is and always was bisexual. She had a child (Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler) with Azazel (a Russian mutant teleporter). She also had a long time relationship with Destiny, a blind woman precognitive. And they raised Marie (Rogue) so she would some times use the name Raven as her last name.
There are lesbian subplots in the Netflix series Jessica Jones. Jones' best friend is married to a very powerful city attorney, in season one they were in the middle of what looked to be a particularly nasty divorce.

I'm tired of H'wood trying to change established characters. Make them darker, make them gay, make the males female, make the redheads black... Either embrace your place in a creative economy or study accounting. Make your own darned characters!
