...Role of Black 'Star Wars' Character: 'Let's Be Honest.' Link to Fox; Link to UK's GQ.
“What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side.”
I think Finn was one of the more promising characters, in fact probably the most promising character, to come out of TFA. He was clearly set up to be the main character since he's shown first, and his reaction to the destruction of the village is shown in detail. I'm going to propose a possible alternative reason here, not to take away from Boyega's experience but to enhance it.
I think Finn was pushed aside because, for some reason, the Lucasfilm story group decided to promote women over men, even a black man. I think that this whole 'woke' business slides from cause to cause like a bunch of rabid shoppers on Black Friday, pushing one group out of the way in order to promote another. IMO, when TFA was being written and filmed, race was the "K-Mart Blue-Light Special" of the time while, when TLJ came along the mob had moved on to Women yet again. IMO, this destroyed the continuity set up by TFA and robbed fans of a truly interesting character, a Storm Trooper who was both Force-sensitive (why didn't anybody notice? He was on a mission with Kylo Ren, for Pete's sake and KR didn't notice?) and who wanted out of the First Order.
I also think that Disney used him to market to western audiences while, as we've seen over and over, his presence in the film was severely downplayed in the Chinese marketing. This is a race thing. Maybe Disney/Lucasfilm decided to curtail his role not only for 'Whammenz' but for the Chinese audience. I believe that Finn, and thusly Boyega, were given the double-whammy short-shrift.
YMMV. What do you think?
