With Infinity War in theaters (and having seen it Monday), went through our MCU collection to see what we had. Bought Ironman 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And had myself a bit of a mini movie marathon. Began with Ironman and realized that I had sort of missed something.
In the scene where he is taken, after the grenade explodes and he paws at his chest... Stark is wearing a protective vest (because you don't wear a suit vest under the shirt). And here I'd always been thinking "what the heck was the military thinking to have their top ironmonger in a hot zone and with no personal protection?" and "Is Stark so arrogant that he thinks he's not a target in those places?"
And yet, we see that the shrapnel clearly did go right through the vest as if it were silk.

'Bullet-proof' vests aren't. They're much better protection than a shirt or a trash can lid but they're not impervious. That's why you don't shoot at someone in a vest at close range - you could injure or kill them.

Except that most people who shoot somebody in a vest at close range is trying to injure or kill them.

Lol! My eyeballs don't go near the floor - we really need to shampoo the carpet. Yes, they are most definitely trying to injure or kill them... ...unless they're making a stupid video for YouTube and using an encyclopedia for a shield. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/mar/15/woman-jailed-for-killing-boyfriend-in-youtube-stunt-that-went-wrong-monalisa-perez-pedro-ruiz'Bullet-proof' vests are used in normal stand-offs where the two sides aren't that close to one another. Also, if I were going to shoot someone at close range and they had on body armor, I'd still go for the head if unprotected, or the face. I don't even like a cockroach to suffer, and I hate those things with a purple, blinding passion.
