Some people even speculate that he just jumped from the skiff before it was blown up. Seems like something a person interested in survival might do, what with Jabba being strangled and all. Why not take over?

For some reason, I had always though Bib had stayed behind to "hold down the fort" while Jabba and Co went off the party in the Dune Sea.

Same. It was a dark scene for those times. These days, it would come off as brightly-lit.
Just looked it up. The wookipedia says he was on the barge. Still, if I don't see him there myself I'll be skeptical.
